A once in a lifetime discovery

During excavations ahead of the housing developments off Sandy Lane, archaeologists uncovered an extraordinary gold necklace dating from AD 630-670 – the richest of its type ever found in Britain.

Discovered in the grave of a high-status woman, the 1300 year old necklace has at least 30 pedants and beads made from Roman coins, gold, garnets, glass and semi-precious stones. This internationally significant find became known as the Harpole Treasure.
